Merton Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Merton Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing carpet, rug, upholstery and related cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, our customers and the public. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and we strive to maintain safe systems of work in every property we attend.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, protect health, minimise risks arising from our activities and promote a positive safety culture throughout the business. We will continually improve our procedures and review our performance to ensure that health and safety standards are maintained and enhanced where reasonably practicable.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Merton Carpet Cleaners has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that adequate resources are provided. Management will:

Carry out and regularly review risk assessments for all work activities, cleaning methods and products used. Develop safe working procedures based on those assessments and communicate them clearly to all staff. Ensure that all employees receive appropriate induction, training and supervision for the tasks they perform. Provide and maintain suitable equipment, machinery and personal protective equipment in safe working condition. Monitor compliance with this policy through inspections, discussions with staff and review of incident reports. Take prompt corrective action where hazards or deficiencies are identified.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Merton Carpet Cleaners has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees are required to:

Follow all training, instructions and safe working procedures provided by the company. Use equipment, machinery and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Co-operate with management to enable the company to meet its legal and policy obligations. Report hazards, near misses, accidents and incidents as soon as possible. Refrain from any reckless behaviour or misuse of equipment that could endanger themselves or others.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before work begins, our technicians will assess the work area, the surfaces to be cleaned and any other relevant conditions. This assessment may include trip hazards from hoses and cables, electrical safety of sockets, slip risks from wet floors, manual handling requirements, ventilation needs and potential exposure to cleaning chemicals. Based on this assessment, safe working practices will be followed, such as using warning signs, routing hoses carefully, keeping walkways clear and selecting appropriate cleaning methods.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Merton Carpet Cleaners uses professional cleaning products appropriate for carpet and upholstery cleaning. All substances are handled in accordance with applicable control of substances hazardous to health requirements. We will:

Maintain information on the hazards and safe use of the cleaning products we use. Ensure that staff are trained in dilution, application, storage and disposal of chemicals. Store chemicals securely and transport them safely to and from customer premises. Use the least hazardous product that is suitable for the task wherever reasonably practicable. Provide appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks and eye protection where required. Avoid spraying or misting chemicals in a way that could pose unnecessary risk to occupants or pets.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

Our cleaning equipment, including extraction machines, vacuum cleaners and hand tools, will be maintained in a safe and serviceable condition. All electrical equipment will be visually inspected before use and removed from service if any defects are found. Extension leads and cables will be used responsibly to avoid overloading sockets or creating trip hazards. Only trained personnel are permitted to operate machinery and they must do so in accordance with manufacturer instructions and company procedures.

Manual Handling and Physical Safety

Many cleaning tasks involve moving equipment, furniture and hoses. To reduce the risk of strains and injuries, we will:

Train staff in correct lifting and carrying techniques. Encourage the use of handling aids and team lifting where possible. Plan work to minimise unnecessary carrying of heavy equipment over long distances or up multiple flights of stairs. Move furniture carefully to protect both the worker and the customer’s property. Stop work and seek assistance if a task is judged to be unsafe for an individual operative to carry out alone.

Protection of Customers, Occupants and the Public

While working in homes, offices and other premises, we will take practical steps to safeguard customers, occupants and visitors. This includes clearly communicating areas that are wet or being cleaned, positioning warning signs where appropriate, managing cables and hoses to reduce trip risks and keeping children and pets away from work areas and equipment. We will treat all properties with respect, preventing damage to furnishings and surfaces and leaving areas clean and tidy on completion.

Infection Control and Hygiene

Merton Carpet Cleaners recognises the importance of hygiene and infection control in cleaning activities. Staff will maintain good personal hygiene, use appropriate protective equipment and follow any agreed site-specific requirements. Equipment that comes into contact with soiled or contaminated surfaces will be cleaned in line with company procedures. Where customers have specific concerns, these will be discussed in advance and reasonable measures agreed to reduce risk.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses involving employees or others affected by our work must be reported without delay. The circumstances will be investigated to identify immediate and underlying causes so that corrective measures can be implemented. In the event of an emergency, such as fire, serious injury or sudden illness, our staff will follow site emergency arrangements and contact the relevant emergency services as required.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Training is essential to effective health and safety management. Merton Carpet Cleaners will provide initial and refresher training in health and safety awareness, safe use of equipment, chemical handling, manual handling and site-specific requirements where necessary. We will communicate updates to this policy and associated procedures and we encourage employees to raise any concerns or suggest improvements to health and safety practice.

Policy Review

This health and safety policy will be reviewed regularly and when there are significant changes in our operations, equipment, products or relevant legislation. Any updates will be communicated to staff and implemented as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of safety in all carpet and upholstery cleaning work.
